Sacramento, California – MAY 22, 2015 – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded SACRAMENTO ESL PROGRAM a $13,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Greater Sacramento Region.
“We are so excited about having been chosen to receive this huge opportunity from Dollar General Literacy Foundation," says Margo Sterling, President of the non-profit. "We needed a better location for our classes, the ability to get WIFI, a classroom computer, a central location, and so many other things that this grant makes possible. At the present time we have over fifty students in our program taking morning and evening classes in English as a Second Language (ESL). The people of this community are really the winners!"
“It is exciting to see the impact grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make throughout the country, especially as we cross the $100 million threshold in overall donations and the difference it has made to nearly six million people,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation truly embodies the company’s mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve.”
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly six million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
About SACRAMENTO ESL PROGRAM
ESL to SUCCEED
Sacramento ESL Program (SESL) is a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit agency which provides ESL services to adults from 18 years of age and up. For the most part, these adults live in the greater Sacramento area – including Woodland, Natomas, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and South Sacramento. SESL was formed by teachers in public schools for adults when dozens of ESL (English as a Second Language) classes for them were decimated in 2012 throughout the Greater Sacramento region.
SESL started out by offering low-cost classes to low English-proficient speakers, beginning with one class in 2012. We now offer three leveled ESL classes. Three morning and evening instructors teach Literacy through Beginning High levels and another evening instructor offers Intermediate and Advanced levels.
After working in churches for almost four years, we are now located at 4625 44th Street, Room 12, Sacramento, CA 95822. It is located in a new community collaborative called Fruit Ridge Community Collaborative in “Ground Zero” of a depressed area designated a “Promise Zone” by President Obama.
Using the semester system, SESL provides almost twenty hours weekly of language and living skills to students from all around the world September through January and February to the middle of June plus an 8-week summer session each year. This summer, 2015, we had 85 students. Our students come from Turkey, Spain, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, France, China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Japan, Ukraine, Russia, etc.
SESL teachers are credentialed and teach their student-centered classes in a professional manner. They have valuable experience working in American school district adult schools in the US. Two have taught abroad and most are bilingual.
